Archaeologist

Archaeologist

Lowest stage

The Archaeologist is the stage at which knowledge leaves the library and goes into the field, and its kit is purely applied:

the body becomes sturdy enough to cope with all sorts of difficulties;

spirituality is barely enough for a bit of ritual magic;

but the knowledge is extensive: history, wilderness survival skills, and along with them the taboos and mysticism of the ruins.

The latter is not decoration, but a condition of survival at this stage. The ruins of the world of "Lord of Mysteries" are full of things that must not be touched and must not be spoken of; the Archaeologist differs from the ordinary seeker of antiquities in that he knows these taboos in advance.

The detail of the formula also speaks to this: the ingredient includes an ancient object with a measure of mystical power, and the canon honestly warns — choosing the wrong one can prove very dangerous. Ascension to the eighth stage is in itself a test of what the Archaeologist was supposed to have learned.
