Student (Sequence 0)

The Disciple, also known as the White Tower, is the pinnacle of the path of knowledge, and the canon defines its symbolism in one phrase: knowledge leads to calamity.

Its authorities match this:

Omniscience — it encompasses all that exists and does not depend on the Spirit World; at this level its domain is Knowledge itself. Since omniscience implies omnipotence, the White Tower is capable of reproducing any ability, reaching the power of the original or even surpassing it — but this does not apply to authorities and symbols;

The Ladder of the Astral World — the bearer influences to some degree the concept of the Astral World's descent; he cannot yet fully block viceroyalty, sacrifice, or subjugation, but he can quite well hinder them;

Creation — a share of this authority, stemming from the symbolisms of the Creator and the Omnipotent and the Omniscient: the omniscient White Tower naturally creates anything, but cannot go beyond the symbolisms and authorities that do not belong to it;

Calamity — and its share as well.

The canon also makes an important caveat about the limits of omniscience: even when seeing information about the future, the White Tower does not discern it in full if it concerns something of a high level. It can vaguely foresee that someone will obtain something unique, and yet not know what exactly. And its omniscience can be thrown off by symbolisms such as Foolishness and the Unimaginable — that is, the path of the Fool.

The Ladder of the Astral World also means something else: layers of knowledge leading to the very essence of the universe and to its most fundamental dangers. Hence the final symbolism of the path.

The ascension ritual puts a period on this thought: to take part in a calamity staged by a being above the zero step, and survive.
