After the events in Tingen, Klein Moretti is officially listed as deceased. An unknown nobody named Sherlock Moriarty arrives in the capital Backlund — a private detective with impeccable manners, a monocle, and suspiciously good knowledge of the paranormal.

Under this guise, Klein takes on cases that both the police and the churches dismiss: missing people, cursed apartments, possessed dolls. The fees feed him, the investigations grant access to the city's secrets, and each role played to the end advances him along the Fool's path.

It is in Backlund that he digests the Magician potion and learns the main law of the path: not to pretend to be the role, but to be it. Detective Moriarty is not a mask. As long as Klein wears this name, he is Detective Moriarty.

By the Backlund period, Klein had passed through three steps of the Fool pathway:

Seer and Clown - divination, spiritual vision, full control of body and facial expressions: a detective who reads the client by the tremor of their eyelashes.

Magician (Sequence 7) - tricks that became magic: flames from nowhere, ropes living their own lives, and paper substitute figurines that saved his life more than once.

Gray fog - the Tarot Club gatherings continue every week, and the "ancient creature" above the table has already gained a reputation among Beyonders of both continents.
