The Chatterer is a stage where the Abyss gains its first true authority: a share of power over Corruption, concentrated mainly in the domains of Mind and Spirit. As a third-stage Otherworldly, it responds to prayers within a certain radius. The advancement ritual is surprisingly cunning and completely unlike the path's earlier bloody rites: one must find a way to conclude a temporary or indefinite pact of "shared life and death" with a demigod of a purifying path — such as the Sun or the Giant — or with a demigod of a path signifying life, such as the Mother. And take the potion while the pact is in force. The meaning is obvious: the filth that comes with the Abyss potion is quenched by borrowed alien purity. The bearer literally insures himself with another's life. The formula, besides the brain of a verbal devil and the soul stone of a soul demon, includes nine bottles of tears from those who fell into despair, and from different people at that.
