The Otherworldly must behave as prescribed by their stage, until power becomes part of them. Until the potion is digested, the bearer is vulnerable: the power is already there, but not yet the authority over it.
The path roles are functional: the Archaeologist understands what is found, the Craftsman makes with their own hands, the Alchemist transforms one thing into another and is responsible for the result.
The method remained the knowledge of the few for a long time: the hierarchies of churches were in no hurry to reveal it, and many Otherworldly ascended blindly, paying for it with their sanity.
